How Computers and Video Games Cam Damage Your Teeth

Posted on 11/25/2018 by Kooning Family Dentistry
How Computers and Video Games Cam Damage Your TeethComputer and video games are a major pastime for many people. Unfortunately, this sometimes comes at the expense of the oral health. These are some of the ways that your computer and video game usage might be affecting your teeth.

Poor Food Choices

If you spend hours in front of the computer or TV screen each day, you will likely have less time to prepare healthy, nutritious meals. This may have you grabbing foods that are less than ideal for your teeth. Foods that are high in sugar or simple carbohydrates are common selections, and you may not get the necessary allotment of fruits and vegetables. This gives your mouth plenty of time to create harmful acids that can destroy the enamel and attack your gums.

Neglecting Your Oral Health

When your life becomes consumed by computers, video games, and other technology, there is a chance that your oral health and other personal hygiene activities will take a back seat in your life. This isn't strictly an issue when it comes to technology – any time that an activity becomes all-consuming, your oral health may be in jeopardy. If you choose to play video or computer games, make sure you are spending the necessary time on caring for your mouth.

Chewing on Non-Food Items

Consider all of the items around your desk – pens, pencils, highlighters, and other office supplies. For people living with an oral fixation, it may be tempting to chew on one of these items while your mind is occupied on your game. You might not even notice that you're doing it, but damage can occur to your teeth. With time, small fractures may develop on the teeth, and they will progress until you break a tooth or filling.

To keep your teeth healthy if you use the computer and video games frequently, oral hygiene needs to be a priority. Give our office a call today to set up your next appointment.
