What is Periodontal (Gum) Disease?

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, primarily arises from plaque, which is a sticky film of bacteria that irritate your gums more and more as it builds up. Plaque that is allowed to spread and harden becomes tartar or dental calculus.

What is Gingivitis and how Does it Relate to Gum Disease?

Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum or “periodontal” disease. Because gingivitis may not be painful or noticeable, patients often don’t register the first symptoms. Often it will be one of us at Kooning Family Dentistry who will detect gum disease first during a routine checkup.

What are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, we encourage you to schedule a visit to our office, as these may be signs of gum disease:

•  Gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss
•  Duskey red gums
•  Tender gums
•  Swollen or soft gums
•  Receding gums
•  Chronic bad breath

Can Gum Disease be Reversed?

Some of the later stages of gum disease cannot be reversed. However, gingivitis is an early, relatively mild stage of gum disease that can still be reversed. Gingivitis is one of the most common oral health concerns that we at Kooning Family Dentistry and all dentists see. Because pain is not often a symptom of gingivitis and early gum disease, many patients don’t realize that they have gum disease. Oftentimes, it’ll be Dr. Chris Kooning or one of our dental professionals at Kooning Family Dentistry who notice the symptoms first.
