Why Dental Implants?
When there is a loss of a tooth in the mouth, the patient used to have to live without it. This is because a partial denture set would need to sit in a spot where at least four teeth are missing. A full denture set would require the patient to be missing all, or nearly all, of their teeth on the top or bottom arch. If there is not much of the tooth left to use, bonding and crowning cannot be used. This is when dental implants can become a great solution for those with missing teeth that are affecting the quality or functionality of their smile.
Dental Implants Can Save a SmileWhen missing just one tooth in the mouth, dental implants can salvage that area of the mouth. The implant can look just like the tooth that was originally lost, so that it does not appear to be a fake one. It can provide the patient with a more confident smile, while also allowing them to treat the implant just like their normal teeth. This leaves them with less work, unlike dentures that would require additional work with keeping them clean and maintained.
Dental implants are put into the mouth over the course of time, and through multiple procedures. If the bone quality is good, the first step is placing the abutments in the jaw, which will anchor the implants. If the bone quality of the jaw is lacking, a bone graft has to happen prior to the abutment going in. If a bone graft happens first, this has to heal before the implant anchors can be placed.
The process takes multiple visits, depending on the loss of tooth and each individual person. It is important to ask us any questions you may have regarding the procedure each time you come in to see us at Kooning Family Dentistry. This can allow us to become more acquainted to your needs, wants and expectations out of the procedure and your care.
